When I was growing up my best friend would come home from spending time with her family in Maine and absolutely rave about it. The way she talked about this state made it sound like it was the best place on earth. After visiting for my first time (almost a decade ago) I now feel exactly the same way.
Maine is an incredible state full of beautiful vistas, rocky coast, delicious food, and kind people. It was a no-brainer that when I decided to go visit Emma for a weekend that we'd head up to Maine for an overnight.
We started our weekend in the Camden Hills State Park and hiked the beautiful Maiden Cliffs Trail. It was a two-mile loop that went up the mountain to a lovely overlook of Megunticook Lake. The trail has a fair amount of elevation gain for the short distance, it certainly had our hearts pumping by the time we reached the top!
We quickly learned that there isn't much open at the beginning of May, but we found this delightful roadside stand for some delicious lunch.
We then checked in at our hotel - the Rockland Harbor Hotel. The rooms were big, had a little balcony with chairs and a view of the harbor, and even had a patio with a fire outside during the evening hours.
After checking in, we went down the street to pick up Emma's bike rental from a Side Country Sports. Pickup was a breeze and we rode around town to get our legs ready for the next day.
Our last activity of the evening was walking out to the Rockland Harbor Breakwater Lighthouse.
We watched the sunset from the breakwater and then went off in search of ice cream. We ended up bringing it back to our hotel (Maine is sort of cold in early May) and enjoyed some HGTV before bed. We needed a full night of sleep for our adventure to Vinalhaven the next day. More of that fun day coming soon!
